Richard Stockton Rush Jr: Facts About Stockton Rush’s Father
Richard Stockton Rush Jr was an American businessman, former Marine, stage performer, and San Francisco society figure. Friends often called him “Tock” Rush. He came from a family with deep ties to early Ame.
He later built his own career in oil and gas, property investment, and international development. His name gained new public attention after the 2023 death of his son, Stockton Rush, the cofounder of OceanGate and pilot of the Titan submersible.
Who Was Richard Stockton Rush Jr?
Rush was born on November 15, 1930, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Richard Stockton Rush and Deborah Norris Brock Rush. Princeton records say his family line included two signers of the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Rush and Richard Stockton.
That family history gave him links to some of the oldest political families in the United States. Yet his adult life was not limited to family status. He served in the military, worked in business, supported public health education, and took part in theater and private civic groups.
His Initial Life
Rush grew up with a strong East Coast family identity. His ancestors included physician and statesman Benjamin Rush and New Jersey lawyer Richard Stockton. Both men signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776. This heritage stayed part of the Rush family story for generations.
He attended South Kent School in Connecticut before college. The school gave him a structured boarding school education. He later moved into an Ivy League setting at Princeton. Sports, theater, and campus groups became a large part of his student life.
His Education and Campus Life
Rush graduated from Princeton University with the Class of 1953. His college years were active. He played freshman football, varsity hockey, and rugby. He stayed with the rugby team for all four years. He became its vice president during his senior year.
He also joined two well known Princeton groups. He ate at Tiger Inn, one of the university’s historic eating clubs. He also performed with the Princeton Triangle Club, a student theater group known for musical comedy. These interests showed his creative side as well as his athletic one.
His Military Service in the U.S. Marine Corps
After Princeton, Rush joined the United States Marine Corps. He served from 1953 to 1955. Princeton’s memorial record says he became part of an elite volunteer reconnaissance unit.
The unit went ashore before assault landings. Its members gathered information about beaches and coastal areas before larger forces arrived. The work required fitness, judgment, and calm under pressure. His service came at the start of his adult career and before his move into business.
His Business Career in Oil, Gas, and Property
After military service, Rush moved into the energy sector. Later reports identify him as chairman of Peregrine Oil and Gas Company in Burlingame, California. He also chaired the Natomas Company in San Francisco, which held major interests in oil and property.
His business interests also reached New Zealand. Princeton’s memorial says he helped build Takaro, a hunting and fishing preserve that earned praise from sports visitors. The project linked land development, tourism, and outdoor recreation. It became one of the more unusual parts of his business record.
Public sources do not give a verified figure for his personal net worth. His family clearly had major business assets and wealthy connections. Still, there is no reliable public audit of his private fortune. Claims that assign him a precise dollar value should be treated with care.
His Marriage to Ellen Davies
Rush married Ellen Margaret Davies, the daughter of oil executive Ralph K. Davies and arts patron Louise M. Davies. Reports say the couple met at a San Francisco society event in 1957. They became engaged soon after. Their marriage joined two families with strong business and social ties.
Ralph K. Davies rose through Standard Oil of California and later became a major shipping executive. Louise Davies became one of San Francisco’s best known arts supporters. She donated millions toward the concert hall that became Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall.
The Princeton memorial names three children from the marriage: Deborah, Catherine, and Stockton III. Ellen died in 1988. Rush later married Nancy, who survived him when he died in 2000.
His Theater and Recovery Work
Business was only one part of Rush’s life. He also acted on stage. He earned praise for his role as an executive officer in The Caine Mutiny Court Martial. His Princeton memorial lists the performance as a notable part of his life outside business.
Rush also founded the Recovery Institute. The group focused on education about alcohol abuse. This work showed a different side of his public life. It placed more attention on health education and recovery support.
He was also active in San Francisco’s Bohemian Club. At the time of his death, he was the club’s president elect. The private club has long included figures from business, politics, media, and the arts. Claims about secret roles or unusual rituals tied to Rush often come from forums rather than strong historical records. His confirmed position was president elect.
How Did Richard Stockton Rush Jr Die?
Richard Stockton Rush Jr died on January 1, 2000, in San Francisco, California. He was 69 years old. Princeton Alumni Weekly reported that he died after a short illness. Public records do not give a detailed medical cause.
His funeral drew people from his long social and professional life. James A. Baker III, a former U.S. secretary of state and fellow Princeton alumnus, gave a tribute. John Spencer also spoke. Burial records place Rush at Old Saint David’s Church Cemetery in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
His Connection to Stockton Rush and OceanGate
The Rush name reached a much larger audience in June 2023. His son, Richard Stockton Rush III, better known as Stockton Rush, was the cofounder and CEO of OceanGate. He died with four other people when the Titan submersible imploded during a dive toward the wreck of the Titanic.
News reports then looked closely at Stockton’s family background. That coverage brought his father back into public discussion more than two decades after his death. Reporters highlighted the family’s ties to oil, shipping, San Francisco society, Princeton, and early American political history.
The father and son followed different paths. The elder Rush worked mainly in energy, property, public service, and social institutions. Stockton Rush focused on aerospace, engineering, and deep sea tourism. Their stories still share themes of wealth, risk, private enterprise, and elite education.
His Legacy and People Interest Today
Richard Stockton Rush Jr left a record that crossed business, military service, theater, health education, and private civic life. His work with Peregrine Oil and Gas, Takaro, and the Recovery Institute gave him an identity beyond his famous family name.
His historic lineage also remains a key part of his biography. The links to Benjamin Rush and Richard Stockton connect the family to the founding era of the United States. His marriage into the Davies family added another layer through oil, shipping, and San Francisco arts philanthropy.
Today, much of the interest in Tock Rush comes from people researching Stockton Rush after the Titan disaster. That renewed attention can mix solid records with rumor. The clearest picture comes from Princeton records and established news reports. They show a wealthy and well connected man, but also one with a varied life in service, business, theater, and education.

The Holland name opened a few doors. Sam still had to prove that he belonged in the kitchen. Public film records give Sam’s birth date as February 14, 1999, and identify Kingston upon Thames as his birthplace. He shares both details with his twin brother, Harry.
Who Is Sam Holland?
Sam Holland is a British chef who creates approachable recipes for young and inexperienced home cooks. His work now includes cooking videos, live food events, brand projects, and a published cookbook.
He is the second-youngest member of the four Holland brothers. Tom is the eldest, followed by twins Sam and Harry, while Paddy is the youngest. Their parents are Dominic Holland, a comedian and author, and Nikki Holland, a professional photographer.
Being related to a major film star brought public attention early. But attention is not the same thing as a career. Sam found his direction through food, then spent years learning the less photogenic parts of the trade: preparation, timing, repetition, cleaning, and long shifts.
He’s Growing Up in the Holland Family
The Holland brothers were raised in and around Kingston upon Thames in southwest London. Their home mixed ordinary family routines with creative work. Dominic wrote and performed comedy, while Nikki handled photography projects.
Tom’s acting career changed the family’s public profile. His lead role in The Impossible and later casting as Spider-Man drew reporters toward his parents and brothers. Suddenly, family photos and childhood stories had an audience far beyond Kingston.
Still, the brothers remained closely connected. Tom pursued acting, Harry moved toward filmmaking, and Paddy also developed screen credits. Sam’s interest kept returning to meals and the way food could hold a family gathering together.
The family later turned Tom’s reach into charitable work through The Brothers Trust, founded by Dominic and Nikki in 2017 with the support of all four sons.
His Love of Cooking
Sam has credited his grandmother, known in the family as Granny Tess, with shaping his early view of food. He watched her prepare meals and saw cooking as an act of care, not merely a technical skill.
That influence stayed with him. His food often leans toward meals people can share at home: roast dinners, pasta, hearty sauces, baked dishes, and simple comfort food.
As boys, Sam and Harry even launched a small baking business called The Twin Bakers. They made brownies and soda bread, then sold them from door to door.
The operation ended for a painfully believable reason. The twins became worried that parents of school friends might answer. Ambition met teenage embarrassment, and embarrassment won.
Yet the idea behind it survived. Sam enjoyed making food for others, and he was willing to turn that interest into work.
Why Sam Holland Chose Culinary Training?
Sam did not move straight from school into a settled career. He spent time at university before deciding that the route did not suit him.
He later trained at Leiths School of Food and Wine, a respected culinary school in London. There, casual interest became structured study. Students learn knife skills, timing, sauces, baking methods, ingredient handling, and the discipline required in a professional kitchen.
Sam has described his period at Leiths in strongly positive terms. The school later featured him as a graduate who had moved from formal training into restaurant work and cookbook publishing.
Leaving university could have looked like a backward step. In practice, it placed him in an environment that matched his strengths.
His Restaurant Work at Gleneagles and Chez Bruce
After his culinary studies, Sam gained experience at Gleneagles, the luxury Scottish hotel and resort. He later worked at Chez Bruce, a Michelin-starred restaurant in London.
These were not decorative names added to a social media biography. Professional kitchens demand speed, consistency, and close attention to detail. A cook may repeat the same preparation dozens of times, then return the next day and do it again.
Sam has said his training gave him a base in classical French cooking. His own style also draws from British family meals and the food he encounters while travelling.
That combination explains much of his public cooking. The methods can be formal, but the final dishes rarely feel distant. He tends to make food that belongs on a home table rather than behind a velvet rope.
He’s Cooking for Tom Holland During Spider-Man
Sam’s culinary career crossed Tom’s film work in 2019. While Tom was working on the second Spider-Man film, the studio offered to provide him with a chef. Tom asked for Sam instead. His younger brother then lived with him and prepared meals during the production period.
Tom later described the arrangement during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, saying Sam cooked for them each day.
It was a useful job for both brothers. Tom received reliable meals during a demanding shoot. Sam gained experience planning food around irregular schedules, long working days, and individual preferences.
Years later, that kitchen connection continued. Sam shared recipes with Tom, who used some of the vegetarian dishes while cooking for Zendaya.
He’s From Professional Kitchens to Social Media
Restaurant work taught Sam technique. Social media taught him how to explain it. His cooking videos focus on clear steps and familiar ingredients. Instead of presenting every meal as a grand event, he often shows viewers how to make useful food without turning the kitchen into a disaster zone.
His official profile describes him simply as a chef, creator, and “average golfer.” The last part is a small joke, but it also signals the tone of his platform. He does not present himself as an untouchable celebrity chef.
The Holland connection certainly helped people find his page. Sam then had to give them a reason to stay. Recipes did that.
His audience includes students, first-time renters, young workers, and people who know they should cook but would rather not face a recipe with 27 ingredients and three specialist pans.
Sam Holland’s Kitchen Kickstart
Sam published his debut cookbook, Sam Holland’s Kitchen Kickstart, in August 2025. The book was designed for beginner cooks, especially people leaving home or entering university. It offers simple and affordable recipes alongside basic advice on shopping, meal planning, storing food, freezing leftovers, and working in a small kitchen.
Penguin described the book as a practical guide for start-out cooks. Its recipes include quick curries, pasta dishes, breakfast food, tacos, sauces, and homemade alternatives to common takeaways.
The hardback runs to 224 pages. Rather than pretending readers already understand kitchen language, Sam explains the starting points.
Tom publicly promoted the release and said he had been making recipes from it. He singled out the achievement with the pride of an older brother, while Sam’s own promotional work kept the focus on helping nervous cooks gain confidence.
His Bond With Tom Holland
Public interest often frames Sam through Tom, but their relationship appears less dramatic than the headlines suggest. They support each other’s work and remain part of a tightly connected family.
Tom gave Sam a valuable early opportunity by hiring him during a film shoot. Sam later helped Tom with recipes. Tom then used his large platform to promote Sam’s cookbook.
It is a useful exchange, though not an equal one in terms of fame. Tom’s public reach is enormous. Sam has never tried to compete with it. He has instead built a profession that works beside the family name without copying his brother’s career.
Their connection also extends to The Brothers Trust. Tom acts as its main public figure, while Sam, Harry, Paddy, and their parents support events and fundraising projects.
Sam Holland and Clark Stewart
Sam’s private life became a larger public story in June 2026 when he announced his engagement to Clark Stewart.
The couple shared the news on June 18. Sam had proposed two days earlier during a trip to Scotland, and photographs from the celebration showed them at Gleneagles.
The setting carried a personal connection. Gleneagles was one of the places where Sam had worked while developing his professional cooking experience.
Clark had also helped test recipes during the creation of his first cookbook, along with members of the Holland family and other people close to him.
Sam does not build his food platform around his relationship. Most of his public content still centres on recipes, travel, family appearances, and the occasional round of golf.
Their Charity Work
The Holland family launched The Brothers Trust to direct public attention toward smaller charities that might otherwise struggle for coverage.
Nikki and Dominic founded the organisation in 2017. Tom became its main fundraising draw, while his brothers supported campaigns, videos, events, and charity partnerships.
Sam’s involvement fits naturally with the family structure. Each brother contributes in a different way, and the organisation uses their combined audience to raise money rather than forming a separate celebrity foundation for each person.
The Trust has supported projects connected with children, health, education, and vulnerable communities. Its official material describes Tom as the focal point but makes clear that Sam, Harry, and Paddy remain involved.
Where Is Sam Holland Now?
By 2026, Sam had become more than a familiar face in Holland family photographs. He was a trained chef with luxury hotel and Michelin-starred restaurant experience, an established food creator, and the author of his first cookbook.
He still benefits from being Tom Holland’s brother. Denying that would be silly. But a famous surname cannot teach knife control, survive a restaurant shift, or produce a cookbook that readers can actually use.
Sam’s career rests on a quieter kind of progress. He left a university path that felt wrong, trained professionally, worked behind kitchen doors, and learned how to explain cooking to beginners.
His first book captured that purpose in practical form: 224 pages built for people facing an empty fridge, a small budget, and perhaps their first saucepan.
